The Sun Journal, published since 1876, is the torch-bearer in New Bern’s long newspaper tradition that began in the 1740s with the publication of North Carolina’s first newspaper and magazine. New Bern is the state’s second oldest city, founded in 1710, and was the last colonial capital, the first state capital, was home to the state’s first printing press, and the state’s first public school and library. A thriving community today, New Bern’s historic downtown sets the standard for preservation and revitalization. The community is home to a manufacturing base that produces, among many things, world class yachts, plumbing fixtures, sound mixing boards and household appliances. Craven County is home to the elite 2nd Marine Corps Air Wing and Fleet Readiness Center East, the largest civilian employer in North Carolina east of Interstate 95. The Sun Journal was among the top three for general excellence among newspapers its size in 2013, according to the North Carolina Press Association, and the Sun Journal website, newbernsj.com, consistently ranks among the top three general excellence websites among mid-size daily newspapers in the state.
